The Australian Open as we know it today is made up of five main divisions; men’s singles and doubles, women’s singles and doubles, and mixed doubles. However in the first tournament held in 1905, originally called the Australasian men’s championships, there were just two main fields – the men’s singles and doubles, consisting of just 17 players. The remaining three fields were not introduced for another 17 years in 1922, were the women played in the Australasian women’s championships. It was not until 1969 the tournament was named as the Australian Open, as it was in this year, for the first time, professionals and amateurs could enter the competition together.
