Serena Williams has defeated Justine Henin in a tough match to win the 2010 Australian Open Women’s Final at Rod Laver Arena 6-4 3-6 6-2.
The match lasted more than two hours and gave Williams her fifth Australian Open championship. It was the first time that Williams and Henin, two of the most successful women’s players, have meet in a grand slam final.
The title lifts Williams’ total major series wins to 12, equal to Billie Jean Kings, the most by a woman.
It was a struggle for the champion, with the former world number one, Henin, not giving up easily to her current day counterpart.
It was not sure whether Williams would be able to play to her best going into the match with a heavily strapped hamstring after injuring it in Sydney.
But doubts disappeared with the fantastic tennis on show.
It was disappointing for Henin, however the dream comeback is not over, with the Belgian confirming if all goes to plan she will be back at Melbourne Park this time next year.
